Weekly Notices - 29th June 2025
Over the last several weeks, Paula and I have watched groups of men working on our leaky flat roof, and then on our asbestos problem. It has been an interesting process, and we have enjoyed hearing the conversations and humour that these young men shared.
This morning, as the asbestos team packed up to have their job signed off, I went upstairs to say ‘hello’ and ‘goodbye’ to the men and to thank them personally for ensuring the ongoing safety of our church. One particular young man called out “Hi,” and approached me as he struggled with his massive bundle of plastic covering. We chatted for a couple of minutes and he said how it would be great to come back into the church and share our worship space. I immediately welcomed him to return on a Sunday morning, but he lives out near Ohoka and it might be a problem getting here in time. But he was really keen to come back into ‘one of the most beautiful churches in Christchurch’ just to see how we hold our services.
A seed has been planted!!! And there is no turning back from this!!! I am now planning a special service in October to which all the builders will be invited and in which we can, together, showcase St Aug’s at its best!
May God always bless St Aug’s
Your Friend and Vicar, Kofe.

Messy Church at St Augs!!
On Saturday 28th June, from 3pm to 5:30pm we are holding a special ‘Messy Church’ activity day for Pre-School and
Primary aged children in the Hall at St Augustine’s
We welcome anyone who is keen to help run this important church event.
We need people to help with preparation for art activities and music.
We also require helpers to set up trestles and activities, helping with the food in the kitchen and for afterwards tidying up at the end of the activities.
Please come with ideas and ways to support us. RSVP to Rowena Pottinger: 021343884, or rowbillpotty@gmail.com
What is ‘Messy Church’? Messy Church is a church for everyone who may not feel comfortable attending a ‘normal’ church service and who don’t yet belong to a church. It typically includes a meal, hands-on activities such as arts, crafts, meeting God in the outdoors, science activities and more, which are suitable for all ages.
Check out the NZ ‘Messy Church’ website! www.messychurch.nz
On Sunday 29th June, the Sumner Silver Brass Band is joining us again and leading our music (for a ‘Combined 10am Service’).
We have all thoroughly enjoyed this beautiful group of musicians in the past, and I am excited that they are willing to join us again!
The year that keeps giving... us building work(!)
During the last week of June we are having the Sanctuary feature (internal) wall stripped as it has been discovered to contain asbestos.
Very impressive operation complete with complete plastic containment within the scaffolding, an internal 3-stage shower (in the sanctuary area no less, more involuntary baptisms?!?) and venting system (check out the plastic tubing).
The first concert in our current Organ Concert Series featuring Sea-am Thompson was a huge hit with a full house (check out the photos below!).
Get in quick for the next one! (Click here for more details about this series.)
Please be warned that with the commencement of our roof repairs we have LOTS of scaffolding around the place to be aware of. In particular this affects parking near the Hannan Centre ramp.
Be careful out there!
(And here are a couple of shots of the team in the skyline recently.)
Please remember to use our Diocesan Prayer for Regeneration: As the kotuku gently rests upon the tree, come and rest upon us Holy Spirit as we pray for the regeneration of our Diocese… Ever living God, through your Spirit you constantly renew the whole creation; bring regeneration to your Diocese of Christchurch, grant us courage to grow disciples of Jesus, give us vision to reach young people and their families, and strengthen us to create vibrant communities of faith. All this we ask in Jesus' name. Amen.
