Matthew has been vicar of St Augustine’s Cashmere since February 2018. Originally coming from the UK where he was curate of the Constable Churches in Suffolk, and Associate Chaplain at Ipswich hospital. Prior to that Matthew spent many happy years working at the local Council leading teams in diverse areas from environmental health and waste to building and car parking to emergency planning and community protection. He originally trained as an engineer.
Matthew loves the chance to be with people and learn their stories and work out what being a Christian means where we are in the here and now. There should always be time for a chat and a coffee and a chance to pray with you.
His best friend is Claire, and their three children Hannah , Peter and James are just fantastic and we miss them lots as they are still in the UK!
In his spare time he’s likely to outside – perhaps walking or sailing or enjoying the beauty of the world. (Or building a henhouse for Claire’s chickens!)

Claire was licensed as associate priest of St Augustine’s Cashmere in March 2018. Being the wife of Matthew she is able to keep a close eye on him inside and outside of work! Having moved from Suffolk in the UK she’s now finding her feet as an adopted Kiwi. Claire shares with Matthew the three children (Hannah, Peter and James) and has enjoyed watching them grow and develop.
Claire was curate of a busy sub-urban church outside Ipswich where she loved working with families and children. Before ministry Claire trained as a nurse and then as a health visitor (similar to a Plunket nurse). She thoroughly enjoyed this time helping and enabling families to thrive.
In her spare time she wants to learn how to dance, and loves walking the dog (a black Labrador called Fynn) and being outdoors in God’s creation. Alternatively she would like to spend her time paddling round Aotearoa in a canoe, spotting wildlife. She is planning to have some backyard chickens as soon as possible (or when Matthew has built a henhouse).
Claire believes being a Christian is about celebrating the goodness of God and his love shown to all of us!
